“EVEN DARING IDEAS CAN COME REAL” – JANNA BULLOCK
The root translation of Dacha is a “gift given publicly”.
Janna Bullock has inventively assembled all of the requisite ingredients for the quintessential Dacha. The sophisticated design not only sets the mood for a relaxed and quiet respite from urban life, but also inspires with a visual experience that is both creative and uplifting. Through the combination of art, furniture and design, Janna has created a country home for a family in search of community; in this case, the nature-rich Ecoestate Pavlovskaya sloboda.
Dacha is community: a place where retired people find the hobby of their lives among orchards, gardens and farming. A place where busy city-dwellers spend weekends entertaining, watering plants and simply breathing fresh air.
Upon entering the Dacha, the visitor encounters a humble coat rack, tall rubber gardening boots and an amusing pierced watering can by the artist Rolf Sachs. Ancestral portraits adorn the walls paying tribute to friends and family. Open windows framed with organic cotton curtains stir poetic musings at the writing desk. In the living room, guests are invited to sit in a beautifully carved wood and iron rocking chair and to warm both water and heart with an antique samovar, all to the sound of classical music playing from a vintage victrola.
Alongside these traditional pieces, Mrs. Bullock has introduced the avant-garde works by the renowned French pop artist Arman, highlighting the enduring cultural tie between France and Russia. The Dacha inspires art and writing as it sheds urbanity for a familial and wholesome environment, with the art of Arman in each room truly invoking peace.
The design of this Russian House in Dacha style is not so much a pleasing grouping of materials and concepts, as a subtle yet poignant lifestyle choice.
