FERNANDO AND HUMBERTO CAMPANA
Brazil
Fernando (1961) and Humberto (1953) Campana are two of the most famous South American designers since 1983. Fernando, who graduated in architecture, and Humberto, who studied law, have worked together in the field of design, or better between art and design. In their joint studio, a sort of converted garage, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, they develop furniture which are often based on everyday, ready-made materials – waste products as well as industrial goods. Some of their designs are manufactured.
In 1998 they exhibited at MoMA, New York. Curated by Paola Antonelli, Project 66 was their first international show in tandem with Ingo Maurer. In the same year they sealed their first partnership with Edra, in Italy, with the Vermelha Chair. They have several pieces in the permanent collections of MoMA, New York, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris and the VitraDesign Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany.
Fernando and Humberto Campana have achieved worldwide recognition through their original approach to design. Their ordinary materials are transformed and reinvented into priceless objects that carry both creativity and the spirit of Brazil – a combination of chaos and solution. The Campana Brothers are constantly investigating new design possibilities. The exchange of information creates bridges and dialogue between communities factories, andindustries which is a constant source of inspiration.
Estudio Campana designs are part of the permanent collections of MoMA New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany.
