CONTRASTS GALLERY
Contrasts Gallery, founded in Hong Kong in 1992, does not follow the established model of Western art galleries; rather, it has evolved from the philosophy of Chinese Literati art, which does not segregate or hierarchize art forms. The Gallery exhibits multi-discipline artists and promotes cross-cultural exchange by inviting artists to China to create works that address contemporary China. Work is shown at three different gallery locations in Shanghai and one in Beijing.
Contrasts’ fine art program encourages a re-evaluation of contemporary Chinese art by featuring works that synthesize Chinese sensibilities with an international visual language. Chinese artists, such as Zhang Huan and Shao Fan, reinterpret their traditions by fusing them with Western influences to express their feelings about the dynamic changes in China today. The Gallery also invites International artists to come to China as part of its artist in residence program to produce new bodies of work.
Besides its fine art program, Contrasts Gallery also shows works by established and emerging international designers, such as Maarten Baas, Jurgen Bey, Mattia Bonetti, and XYZ Design, at its design consulate in Shanghai and design fairs around the world. Designers are invited to push the boundaries of traditional Chinese art and craft techniques to create new works that often reflect their experiences in China or some aspect of Chinese culture.
