Born in 1965, Hervé Van der Straeten is an independent designer. His unique pieces orlimited editions, jewellery or furniture collections are designed in his own bronze and cabinet-making workshops, then exhibited in his gallery in the Marais district of Paris. He also worked successfully in cosmetics and table ware. Combining disparate materials, variations of form, the challenge of volumes and eclectic partnerships, the work of Hervé Van der Straeten combines absolute precision with a radical freedom of tone. His artistic approach is hybrid, elegant, understated and offbeat. Hervé Van der Straeten is one of those designers who prefers to work as an artist rather than on an industrial scale, thus maintaining control and freedom.
Whatever his designs – consoles, mirrors, cabinets, chandeliers, candelabras, bottles or jewellery – this graduate of the Ecoledes Beaux Arts always strives for apuregraphic style based on radical choices: movement, elegance, offbeat stance.
Although he designs all his products himself, decides on form and matter, which often takes months – to his own production workshops. In this way he can follow through the process from its genesis to its fulfillment.
