ROLF SACHS
Switzerland
Born: August 10, 1955 - Lausanne, Switzerland.
Rolf Sachs first studied business administration in London and San Francisco and for the past twenty years has focused on furniture design and is now a well-known designer artist recognised for his distinctive approach. He has had a number of one-man and group exhibitions in the USA, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Austria and the UK.
His pieces are inspired by the world of fine, rather than decorative arts. He distances himself from the design excesses of recent years and avoids superfluous embellishment. The conceptual, not the decorative aspects are all- important to him.
A purist by education as well as nature, he has been heavily influenced by the art that surrounded him as a boy growing up in Switzerland. He loves the work of Malevich, the De Stijl, Donald Judd and Joseph Beuys. But there is also a human element to his artworks, which is where the humour enters into it: “I love humour and I think it is a very important thing in life and it is part of my natural self, and it automatically gets translated in to the pieces and I like it. Some other people would say one should be extremely stringent and strict about it but I think life is too short to be too strict. So I always like if one can add a little twinkle in the eye and a smile on the face”.
